"Living in the country, landscape is a daily part of my life.  I am constantly inspired with nature's immeasurable compositions.  Whether it is the way the sun casts a shadow from an oak tree across a parched summer hillside, or the colors created when the first hot winds of the season begin to dry the spring grasses.

The landscapes of northern California, particularly the hills north of Vacaville, have a rhythm of line.  It is a rhythm that fluctuates with intensity and subtlety, convergence and isolation, activity and stillness.  It is a rhythm that I compare to a musical score, and one that I feel when the composition is visually in balance.

My paintings often have the view from the driver's seat of a vehicle.  Like many parents, I have spent countless hours ferrying children to their events and appointments.  While driving I am constantly catching mental snapshots of landscapes; noting the angle of light, the curve of the hill, the character of a tree, or the play of light and shadow as it falls across a road.  Roadways appear frequently in my work because of this perspective, and as a commentary regarding the impact they have on landscape.  Roads create a contradiction - a path that takes us to the place we wish to find serenity and beauty, yet a path that brings the development that forever changes the landscape.

The use of color is an important emotional and visual element.  Red in particular is the color that speaks loudest to me; therefore I instinctively use this color to communicate at different volumes to those who view my work.  Interplay of color is intriguing and I am always experimenting with combinations that give an interesting vibrancy to the image.

I primarily work in acrylics and have developed a style that takes advantage of the fast drying time of this medium.  Working quickly between paint, water and glazing medium I blend the paint directly on the surface.  This technique leaves a hint of the original color and more depth to the image.  The ability to glaze and layer my colors quickly, yet have the flexibility of opaque coverage makes acrylic paints my preferred medium.  Masonite and wood panels have the smooth texture and strong support allowing me to glaze, layer and sand to achieve a rich depth and glow"
